نیمه اول این دیدار بدون گل سپری شد و دو تیم در نیمه دوم هم به گل نرسیدند و بازی به وقت اضافه کشید تا نوزدهمین فینال جام جهانی در وقت قانونی خود برنده نداشته باشد. دو تیم در نیمه اول وقت اضافه هم نتوانستند دروازه‌ها را بگشایند. هلند در وقت اضافه دوم با اخراج یک بازیکن ده یاره شد و بالاخره اسپانیا در واپسین لحظات با گل آندریاس اینیستا به پیروزی رسید

هلندی‌ها پیش از این 2 بار در سال‌های 1974 و 1978با شکست برابر آلمان و آرژانتین در فینال جام جهانی، از کسب عنوان قهرمانی بازمانده بودند
